I love DJing. It pushes me to explore new music genres, to actively watch people experience music, to hone a perfectly crafted set only to toss it all out and adapt the music to vibe of the crowd. It can be empowering one moment and humbling the next.
I publish mixtapes as both a way to promote new artists and as a branding exercise. Coming up with a concept or feeling I want to foster, exploring music that fits the parameters, refining everything into one cohesive set, and then producing cover art that visually captures the auditory experience.
Creating a Brand
Every DJ's gotta have a name. But why have a name when you can build a brand?
As I've slowly come to understand my particular sound, I realized that I like exploring juxtaposition. A hip-hop song that rides on some banging EDM beats. Or a rock song that's crashing in with electronica and has me seeing 80's neon when I close my eyes. Two things that shouldn't work together but somehow do, creating a new, unexpected experience.
The brand "sparkle bomb" is built upon these juxtaposing forces. Fusing the dark, destructive power of a "bomb" with the carefree, nearly emasculating nature of "sparkles" to create that beautiful collision of two opposing things that shouldn't work together but some how do.
It also has the added benefit of forcing me not to take this to seriously as it's hard to be serious when you say "Uh, yes hello, I'm sparkle bomb."
