Schematic Design
After spending a year on the Mies Bookshelf, I needed a simple project that could be knocked out in a few weeks.
The iMac sitting on a desk was the perfect target for upgrade. The design was a simple form mimicking the design and materials of the Mies Bookshelf, but its elegance would come from hiding all the hardware so it appears to float in space.
SketchUp Form Development
When modeling the shelf in Sketchup, one key detail that arose was managing the iMac's cord. While I couldn't hide it completely, I could make the cord appear to pass through seamlessly while hiding a power strip within the shelf itself.
Fabrication: the frame
Since the frame would be completely hidden, I didn't have to obsess over every detail of its fabrication. A simple 2x4 construction with a MDF bottom to hold the power strip.
Fabrication: the skin
The same veneer panels used in the Mies Bookshelf would slide over the 2x4 frame and hide any mounting hardware.
Install: skeleton
With the frame installed, I ran the electrical cords to their proper locations.
Install: skin
Once the frame was installed, the finished "sleeve" slid on top to rest flush against the wall.
Details
Cord management was the one key detail that really elevated the aesthetics of the piece.
To secure the finished veneer skin to the structural frame, 2 small set screws are tightened on the underside of the piece.
Hero shots
Even though this project was a fairly basic form, by pulling into the space the aesthetic language set forth by the Mies Bookshelf, it elevated both pieces more than they ever would be alone.
